Christian Science Churches
There are three (3) Christian Science churches and one (1) Christian
Science Society in Northwest Arkansas.
Branch Churches
Known as Churches of Christ, Scientist, each local church is
a branch of The First Church of Christ, Scientist, in Boston, Massachusetts.
Each branch church is locally and democratically governed.
Each branch church strives to live up to definition of
church given by Mary Baker Eddy in Science and Health:
"CHURCH. The structure of Truth and Love; whatever
rests upon and proceeds from divine Principle.
The Church is that institution, which affords proof of its
utility and is found elevating the race, rousing the dormant understanding from
material beliefs to the apprehension of spiritual ideas and the demonstration of
divine Science, thereby casting out devils, or error, and healing the sick." --p.
583:12-19
Ours is a lay church (we have no ordained clergy), so church members are elected to conduct the services. Our Sunday morning services include congregational
singing of hymns, scriptural readings, prayer, and a prepared sermon drawn from the
Bible and Science and Health with Key to the
Scriptures by Mary Baker Eddy. These two books serve as our
pastor.
Our informal Wednesday evening mid-week meeting includes
Scriptural readings and related passages from the Christian Science
textbook, followed by time set aside for members of the congregation to
testify to healings experienced as a result of prayer or share insights
gained during their spiritual growth.
Visitors are welcome at any service (and no, we don't single
out newcomers, make them stand up, etc.!)
There are Christian Science churches located in
Fayetteville,
Springdale,
and Rogers.
To find churches in other areas, look in the Christian
Science Journal (available at any Christian Science Reading Room) or
consult this on-line directory.
Christian Science Societies
A Christian Science Society is an organized group of
Christian Scientists that gather to conduct Sunday services and/or mid-week
testimony meetings. Think of a Society as a small Church. There is
a Christian Science Society located in
Eureka Springs. |
