While visiting Boston recently, my husband and I went to the Museum of Fine Arts intending to spend the afternoon there, then have supper and attend the Wednesday evening Testimony Meeting at The Mother Church nearby. While enjoying the exhibits at the Museum, I felt a sharp internal pain which persisted. My husband, seeing that I was uncomfortable, suggested that we change our plans, return to our hotel room and call a Christian Science Practitioner to treat me.
To me, that would be admitting that my body could dictate my day and my plans. During his three-year ministry, Jesus showed his followers how to be masters of the body using his God-given authority over all types of ailments. Mary Baker Eddy explains how to do this in her book Science & Health with Key to the Scriptures. “ Rise in the strength of Spirit to resist all that is unlike good. God has made man capable of this, and nothing can vitiate the ability and power divinely bestowed on man.” (See page 393 line 12 through line 15 in the chapter on Christian Science Practice.)
So we found a comfortable place in the Museum to sit down, and I gave myself a Christian Science treatment – a focused prayer affirming my position as God’s spiritual child, held in His care wherever I am, and mentally negating the power of pain, replacing it with affirmations of God’s all power, which is healthful and good.
In just a couple of minutes, the pain lessened substantially – enough that I could comfortably continue our tour of the Museum. As we enjoyed another exhibit, the pain left completely. We were able to go ahead with our afternoon and evening plans. The pain hasn’t returned. I’m convinced that pain has no power to interfere with the good that God is continually providing through His tender love for all of His children.
